Special Episode 36: The Devil Wears Prada 2
A Mirandy shipper’s ebullient journey through a sequel that is otherwise…perhaps not so great.
On the first special episode of the relaunched Fansplaining (!), Flourish returns to the podcast with their shipping goggles firmly affixed to their face for a very Mirandy-fueled viewing of The Devil Wears Prada 2. In the theater, Flourish clutched Elizabeth, bit their own knuckles, and repeatedly whispered things like: “THIS IS FANFIC”; Elizabeth watched the film and thought: “I have some notes.” Topics discussed include Flourish’s introduction to Mirandy and femslash generally, the positioning of the original film versus its sequel in the broader cultural landscape, DVP2’s structural issues and commentary about the state of publishing, and digging into what exactly “THIS IS FANFIC” means in this context.
Show Notes
[00:00:00] As always, our intro music is “Awel” by stefsax, used under a CC BY 3.0 license.
[00:03:08] You can browse all of our special episodes via this handy page, or just the Tropefest series. The pair of episodes where we discussed our (2018) fanfiction habits were #7: “The Serial Numbers” and #8: “The Lurker.”
[00:09:17] The article Elizabeth saw (OK, saw the headline of) is “The Devil Wears Prada 2 Is the Try-Hard Sequel Millennials Deserve.”
[00:11:06]

[00:12:36] Telanu’s work on AO3, though they initially published Mirandy fic on their own site. Flourish actually forgot to mention that Telanu has published (but not pulled to publish) a filed-off version of their most famous Mirandy fic, “Truth and Measure,” authored under the name Roslyn Sinclair. (FYI, in the new T&M, aspiring writer Jules Moretti gets a job assisting the ice-queen editor of Du Jour, Vivian Carlisle.)
[00:20:34]
[00:25:12] “Cold War Kids” by Aaron Bady.
[00:27:49] BLACKPINK’s Lisa, who played Mook in White Lotus Season 3, has allegedly been dating Frédéric Arnault, the heir to the LVMH group (that’s short for Louis Vuitton, Moët, and Hennessy). Please note that Patrick Schwarzenegger was in pre-White Lotus commercials for Ketel One, a totally different liquor company:
[00:30:06] It was Banana Republic that had an official collection with Mad Men and their (brilliant!!!) costume designer Janie Bryant, but J.Crew directly capitalized on the menswear trends the show created as well.
[00:41:02]

[00:42:00] Meryl Streep is, in fact, 76 years old. Stanley Tucci is 65. Perfect ages to retire, Miranda and Nigel!!!
[00:44:10] The “Jacobin article” was not in Jacobin, and Flourish cannot find where it actually was. If this critique rings a bell, let us know!
[00:54:56] The great David Carr reporting on McKinsey’s sweep through Condé Nast in 2009.
[01:03:12] The AI agent article was, in fact, in the Guardian.
[01:06:14]
