Special Episode 34: Interview with the Vampire: Season 2

Episode cover: still from IWTV featuring Claudia and Louis at the ticket counter for the Theatre des Vampires. White fan logo in top corner.

Valiantly fighting extreme baby-induced sleep deprivation, Flourish returns to Fansplaining to discuss the most important thing in the world: AMC’s Interview with the Vampire. While the first-season special episode was from a show-only perspective, Flourish and Elizabeth have now collectively read thousands of pages of The Vampire Chronicles, and are able to celebrate the (somehow even better????) second season as both incredible television and an extraordinary work of adaptation. From very smart changes (Madeleine! Louis with agency!) to the many, many metatextual layers (Enduring for Guido!!), why IWTV feels like a truly transformative work.

[00:03:33] Our episode on the first season—lord knows what we said back then beyond effusive praise??

[00:09:06] RJ talks about constructing this version of Louis backwards from Lestat in the final episode of the very good S1 official podcast, which was shamefully not brought back for S2 (AMC why??).

[00:12:42] “They are capers. And he knows it.”

[00:15:00] If you’ve only ever heard the phrase “interrogating the text from the wrong perspective,” we urge you to read AR’s rant in full.

[00:16:43] Our favorite auguste clown.

[00:27:38] This Tumblr post breaks down the book passages vs on-screen dialogue in Enduring for Guido. It’s too much!!!

[00:40:42] Our favorite meta!!

[00:43:22] “I wanted to be a full ghoul, basically.” — Sam Reid

[00:43:53] Eric Bogosian on Jacob Anderson (and Sam Reid)

Jacob and I are very in sync, and we’ve developed a good relationship. He’s not holding back, he’s not being cagey, and that allows you to trust the other person a lot. You’d be amazed how some actors … are actually not good actors. They’re thinking about what they look like and all this crap. Jacob can’t be thinking about what he looks like because sometimes he looks really nasty. He’s letting the emotions build out of him. And yet he’s always very adept at sculpting what he’s doing. It’s a great company. I never work with Sam, I just see him all the time on set, but that scene in the courtroom, and the scene in New Orleans … where’s that shit coming from? The emotion is wild.
